Field Notes

Description:

Large smooth light green leaves about 8-12 in (paler below) with earlobe-like lobes at the base. Large white flower appear with the leaves in early spring. 3-5 in. long petals. Smooth, gray bark. Tree grows 30-50 ft. with a generally straight trunk.

Habitat:

Found in hardwood forests of the southern Appalachians of West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina.

Notes:

All of the Fraser Magnolias were blooming on the Blue Ridge Parkway that day.
