Field Notes

Notes:

I was out in the woods when a large, ungainly insect flapped past my face and disappeared right before my eyes. It took a few moments of searching to find it beautifully blended in on a twig. I don't run into these as often as I'd like. They're really interesting insects.

I didn't know they bite. Have you been bitten?
Nice. Even though male dobsonflies have enormous mandibles, it's the females like the one in your photo which can give a pretty nasty nip.
I can see the resemblance to dobsonflies. I saw one in Brazil. http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/5924411
They're related to dobsonflies, but lack the impressive mandibles, and male fishflies have feathery antennae.
Cool! I've never heard of these. Blends in well though for a large insect.
