Field Notes

Description:

This juvenile common moorhen is a gray rather than the adult black. The white plumage is still apparent. While not seen here, the legs and feet are yellowish and the feet are not webbed.

Habitat:

Widespread in freshwater wetlands. Spotted in the tropical south.

Notes:

The Common Moorhen is protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.

It is awfully cute. I actually thought that it was a different bird from the adult. When it was out of the water, the feet should have been a giveaway. Oh well, file it away as something else I know now.
