Thank you very much for assisting with my Pygmy Mole Cricket spotting, Starleaf!!
And many thanks to you for helping me out again. May 2012 be a good year to all.
Tridactylidae, Pygmy Mole Cricket. Found it's common name and family at last.
My similar spotting here in http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/8029652
For info, the spotting location is just next to a ditch. I've never seen this type of insect after that.
I don't think this is a nymph because this species are still small and black even though they have reached maturity. I live in Sabah too and I have seen plenty of this species. I usually find them jumping at the sandy area around streams or small ponds, I think those are their habitats. I think it's time I should upload a spotting of it too.
Thank you for pointing that out. The grasshopper nymphs of common varieties in my backyard are almost the smaller version of the adults. Quite an eye-opener, this one.
I would confidently suggest it is a grasshopper nymph. Many insects are darker when they are tiny. Color is a poor indicator of color of the adult.
I thought it was a grasshopper of some sort at first (by its feelers, legs...). However the color doesn't suggest that it is though, i.e. I haven't seen a black grasshopper before.
interesting...can't figure out which is head or tail...maybe that is its defense
