Field Notes

Description:

The wiki article describes it better than I can

Notes:

Great for animals, birds, and humans. The berries are said to beef up the immune system, I make jam and spread it on my toast to fend off colds!

The pileated pictured is clinging to some of the drooping outermost branches to try and reach the berries.

I haven't seen it happen since that one summer, though I hear Pileateds in the woods nearby. I know just about every other bird love elderberries and they are perfect late summer food for birds about to migrate.
Nice catch of the pileated trying to pick berries. I'll have to see if they visit the elderberries around here.
