Field Notes

Description:

This moth is a bumblebee mimic. Coloration and shape resemble a bumblebee, but closer examination shows an oblong body, yellow and black coloration but in the wrong composition and pattern. Wing shape is distincly different but difficult to observe. Like other moths, this organism is active during the day.

Habitat:

This individual was sighted in a butterfly garden which was created by the teachers, students and parents as part of a school wide project to create a nature area to study science and the environment.

Notes:

Organisms that micmic others have developed by adopting similar physical and / or behavioral characteristics that help protect the model organism. In this case it is a resemblance in color, shape and feeding behavior.
