Field Notes

Description:

Endemic. Found in foothill forest in northern and western New Guinea. It is also known from the satellite island of Yapen, and perhaps occurs in the Raja Ampat group. This species has been recorded from lowland and mid-montane tropical forests. It is found in both primary and degraded forests. It is a rare species and classified as vulnerable on the IUCN Red Data List http://www.iucnredlist.org/apps/redlist/details/6431/0

Habitat:

This spotting was a village captive.

Notes:

Probably captured in isolated mountains between the Mamberamo River and the north coast, south of Sarmi, Papua. Some weeks after photographing this amazingly docile tree kangaroo, I found that it had been sold.

Fantastic creature. So different from 'ground' kangaroos. Such strong forearms and incredible claws. Love it.
Very cute! When I saw the thumbnail I actually thought this was a stuffed specimen! Lets hope he went to a good home.
thats cute, kinda comical :-)
Thanks for posting it in the "Marsupials of the World" Mission.
Thanks. He was briefly a neighbor's "pet" but it's now gone :-(. Yes, I posted it because these are not commonly seen or known.
He's adorable!. Seems to be pretty rare too. http://www.iucnredlist.org/apps/redlist/details/6431/0 Is he a pet?
