Field Notes

Description:

The small tortoiseshell is one of the first butterflies to appear in my area at the end of winter, and most individuals are now gone or in poor shape. This one spotted at high altitude was still strikingly colourful. The upperwings are dominated by orange with brown and yellow stripes on the forewings. The exterior margin of the wings is decorated with black and blue half circles.

Habitat:

Temperate Europe. Spotted here at 1600 m ASL.

Merci bayucca! I've actually just joined the mission! Good idea to wait for the invites. I'm waiting to ad my spottings also because the team at Noah are working on developing an easier and faster way to ad existing spottings to missions. If the radius doesn't get extended you should maybe consider turning it into a Swiss butterfly mission (an artificial boundary I know, but...).
