Signature Spider Stabilimentum
Argiope luzona
15.456, 119.92
Field Notes
Description:
This Argiope luzona is a very young female. I used to have difficulty in differentiating young females of this species from the males, but I discovered (on the scientific paper mentioned in Notes below) that it is really quite simple. The male's cephalothorax is always bigger than its abdomen, but the female's cephalothorax is always smaller than its abdomen. Now, on to the main purpose of this series of spottings, the Stabilimentum. This one is classified as a "Discoid Stabilimentum". The authors of the scientific paper determined that smaller spiders (body size < 6 mm) produced mainly Discoid Stabilimenta and larger individuals (body size > 6 mm) produced strictly Cruciate Stabilimenta. This kind of information makes everything much easier to understand.
Habitat:
This Argiope luzona was spotted on its web suspended between two large pot plants in the rice mill front yard.
Notes:
The nomenclature which I am using, for the various Stabilimenta shown in this series of spottings, comes from a scientific paper written by a leading group of Philippine academics. https://www.researchgate.net/publication......
