Field Notes

Description:

In its first stage is typically cup-shaped. The top is flat, taking a bath plug form. It is divided into two distinct parts in color: an inner area which at maturity is flat black, the fertile carpophorus; and the outside area, distinctly powdery brown. The size of fully grown individuals can reach 4 cm in diameter.

Habitat:

This is a fairly common and abundant species, which already appears in the summer and during the fall. Fruiting on logs and fallen branches of hardwoods trees, sometimes forming large colonies.

Notes:

We found these on the bark of a dead tree.
