Field Notes

Habitat:

invasive; watersides and wetlands

Notes:

Thanks To ScottRasmussen for the help on this one! I posted an additional picture of this plant practically choking off the creek that flows through this sanctuary. At first I thought i had photographed two separate species as one seemed low-lying and the other was rather tall at 3' as we walked on a board walk lookout point. I see now after comparing the leaves and the info you provided they are one in the same. This species seems a little different then the link provided but for sure is just a varied sub-species if at all. As with most weeds I find, these flowers were enchanting and quite beautiful.

Species ID Suggestions

Water Primrose

Ludwigia grandiflora (uruguayensis)

Every photo of this species of Ludwigia seems to look different from any other photo of it. To complicate things, other common species of Ludwigia have four petals, this one commonly has five petals, and one subspecies, ssp. hexapetala, has six petals! And to complicate matters further, there seems to be some disagreement whether this particular species in the U.S. should be classified as L. grandiflora or L. uruguayensis. The only thing agreed upon is that it's becoming a pest in CA and FL.
Thanks Scott! I notice if you have geotagged your photos it seems to override anything you put in. Perhaps we need a check box to use geotagging or provided location.
This is an introduced species of Ludwigia which unfortunately is becoming a major pest in many parts of the world.
