Field Notes

Description:

Danielle Isolano 11/4/13 2:00 p.m. The Atlantic Ghost Crab has a large pair of white claws and a sand colored body with the ability to camouflage to avoid predation. An interesting fact is that their striking eyestalks can rotate a full 360 degrees. They enjoy eating insects, clams, other crabs, and turtle eggs.

Habitat:

Atlantic Ghost Crabs can be found on the beaches of the Chesapeake Bay from March through fall. They prefer to live inside sand burrows to avoid excess sunlight and thrive during the winter.
