Field Notes

Description:

Non-breeding plumage, winter migrant. <br>
Dark grey to black on back and white from chin to underside. White band across front of neck. Thick, long pointed bill. The bird can stay a long time under water.

Habitat:

These birds were spotted in the bay.

Notes:

As seen in one of the images they can go all the way to the bottom to grab a crab. The crab had no legs when it came up so I believe the legs are removed by the bird while still coming up.
Also spotted near piers and docks probably waiting for fisherman to drop bait fish.
