Field Notes

Description:

While the US East Coast is sweltering Central Europe is getting fresh snow in July! This Geum montanum, a plant from the Rosaceae family, was spotted under the snow yesterday. The first 2 shots show the plant's long feathery fruit while the 3rd shot shows the flower.

Habitat:

Rocky meadow, 2400 m above sea level. There was a small field of them. This plant favours limestone.

Monkey & nana and 7y4r, thank you so much! I believe it is indeed a ripened Geum montanum. I have added a picture of a flower I spotted very nearby which I believe is the same before ripening. In French we call it "gaillard chevelu" or hairy bloke. Thanks again!

Good call, monkey. I was about to give up on IDing this one before I saw your comment. I think the red stem in the second photo makes it more closely resemble Geum triflorum, but I don't think this is the right species either. I think it's safe to say it's some Geum species; I don't think this matches up well with any of the listed species with a page on the wikipedia Geum page. It may be one of the less wikipedia-documented species.
