Field Notes

Description:

Was supposed to get butterfly bushes planted next to my house, but don't think these are anything like butterfly bushes. The stems at the bottom are woody and thick. Then they grow tail or trailing, with thick soft stems that are slightly fuzzy, very large leaves, and no flowers or flower buds in two years. They are quick growing. I pulled one up and the roots were relatively shallow.

Habitat:

Have been planted in partial sun next to my house. Have grown vigorously but no signs of any flowering.

There's a good chance that those are indeed Buddlejas. Even when they're older the newer growth will be soft and downy. I don't know how long they take to produce flowers, but the square stems and the shape of the leaves are consistent with some species of Buddleja or Butterfly Bush. You'll need to be vigilant about their aggressive growth. The common species that's planted, B. davidii, can be obnoxiously invasive.
Buddleia davidii is the most common butterfly bush. Color can vary, purple, pink, white.
i think it has a deep blue flower....the name slip my mind.
