Description:

Walking along an edge of the woods at the community college I spotted these growths from the leaves of a bush - Thanks Makita and Dandoucette for helping to ID this growth.

Habitat:

Rough woodland by a stream

Found this: http://insects.tamu.edu/extension/publications/epubs/e-397.cfm. don't know if it will help but it seems to have some good info. (fungi and viruses cause galls too; who knew)
Ashish we are South of the Canadian border by approx 750 km
Oh...Ohio is like cold Canada...!!
Ashish I wish I could grow Fig here - Only in a Green House I think the winters are too cold.
Find a Cluster fig tree, thats very good Gall leaf observed plant.
Dreamfalcon and Ashish I read today after trying to find something on the web that the maple has a small gnat that causes this on that tree - I've not really nailed the tree here. Maybe the white Elm?
It could be some sort of Gall wasp. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cynipidae
I've seen them before and if I recal they are the galls of a fly of some sort (don't hold me to the fly part, but they are galls)
