Thanks for the link. I've just had another look and I think it's a hornet. Apparently, European hornets and cicada killers are often mistaken for each other.
here is my spotting from last week http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/6894052
cicada killer is the common name, Sphecius speciosus is found in the eastern and midwest U.S. and southwards into Mexico and Central America. I don't know about Europe
Just looked it up and it could be that, but I'm not sure. This was the only shot I managed to get as it just wouldn't keep still!
Possibly. Is that the proper common name for it?
