Male tortoise. "The spur-thighed tortoise or Greek tortoise is one of five species of Mediterranean tortoise."

Habitat:

In our backyard in part sun with dirt/sand mixture, rocks and logs.

Notes:

There are currently at least twenty published subspecies." - Wikipedia

Hello, I temporarily changed the category from pet to reptile so comments are visible. I'm looking for the species of our tortoise. Any help is appreciated!
The Terrapin sounds like a great pet! You're right Emma, the tortoise does not need to eat its food in water although they do get a lot of their water from the plants. My family all love the little dinosaur :)
I don't know about tortoises, I would guess not because they are land creatures. A terrapin is slightly different to both tortoises and turtles. A terrapin is a freshwater creature, which spends quite a lot of time out of water, and will eat grass and plants out of the water. If properly trained, they will also take meat, like ham, out of your fingers. But they need to eat certain foods, like dried shrimp, from the water.
Dangermouse, I have read that turtles do not have Saliva and that is why they need to eat the food in water. is it the same with Tortoise?
Lol, I can imagine! The terrapin doesn't have a name, though I think most of the time he's just called Dude. He had water plants in his pond, but he ate most of them, thinking it was grass! Now when he's out he just tries to get into the dogs' water bowl instead! Great fun, aren't they? :)
Our tortoise is named Fred (kids came up with it). I had put the succulents in his pen to give a natural environment for him and he started pushing them over and eating them! We brought in reinforcements :)
I love the first picture - poor plant, though! :) He is gorgeous! Not a tortoise expert, but I do have a pet terrapin who lives outside in a small pond, but spends a lot of his time inside the house (and yes, he's house trained!)
Thank you Emma. We keep his food separate although it's next to the water. Some of the dry food we add to the fresh food needs to be moistened so it can be mixed in.
His shell is really beautiful! does he eat his food inside a bowl of water?
Thank you! I never noticed the pet category before. I'll edit it now.
Good series, the first pic is really funny! Unfortunately, we can´t help you with the species. But if this is your pet, you should edit this pic and put it into the category of pets
