Description:

Striking bug with body mainly black, and red patches on head, thorax and wings, and red bands on abdomen.

Habitat:

Found on a variety of plants in warm, sunny areas.

Following that link, all lygaeus look the same to me! :) I'll stay with the ID I have for now, but thanks for suggesting alternatives.

According to my wildlife book, it's definitely lygaeus saxatilis - not sure if the common name is right or not, though, but it's not a milkweed bug.
