Killdeer
Charadrius vociferus
36.3729, -94.2088
Field Notes
Description:
Slightly larger than a Robin with a brown upper body, head with brown on the crown and white with black stripes on upper face, throat and breast.
Habitat:
Open country - parks, fields and short grass prairies.
Notes:
Perhaps the best known shorebird that is widely distributed throughout North America. This bird practices a distractive "broken wing" display to distract predators from the nest and chicks. Once the predator has followed the "injured" bird recovers and flies away.
