Field Notes

Description:

Juvenile. Shell was about 3 inches tall. From head to back of shell was about 5 or 6 inches.

Habitat:

Found in a ditch on the side of a sandy dirt road.

@ Alice, thanks! @ Nance, I was thinking it's a box turtle too. But I can't find any pictures that look like it. Even pictures of young ones. But the shape looks like a box turtle. It's the shell pattern I can't match up. I was hoping to find an exact species.
I'm used to the Florida box turtle, so it was enlightening to see the variety of these: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Box_turtle. The Gulf and three-toed box turtles were real surprises.
