Description:

The elfin skimmer is the smallest dragonfly in North America, only growing up to 16 millimeters long. Males become more blue with age, and the females are wasp-like, black with yellow rings on their abdomen. Males guard their territory--two square yards.

Notes:

The elfin skimmer is an endangered species, and in Ohio, is only known from 3 locations. Elfin skimmers live in bogs and fens, and the destruction of their habitat has led to their endangered status. Found at Cedar Bog State Nature Preserve.
