Field Notes

Description:

Large spider, approximately 4cm leg-span. Dark brown with bands on back and legs. Female is carrying a large blue egg sac. Extremely wary - I had to sneak up on her from 10' away.

Habitat:

Found at ~12,000ft elevation in central Colorado Rocky Mountains, above treeline. Rocky, marshy area. She seemed to be occupying a space under a large rock - she would emerge periodically, but flee back under the rock at any sign of movement.

Notes:

The eye configuration and egg carrying suggests a Lycosidae - but I can't tell which one.
