Field Notes

Description:

This shrub, native to the eastern US, has pink flowers in spring followed by purple berries in fall and winter (often eaten by birds). The flowers and subsequent berries grow along the branches where the leaves join. It can get quite tall and leggy, although heavy pruning in early spring makes it fuller and more compact, excellent in a native garden.

Habitat:

Often found wild in woodlands of eastern US.
