Field Notes

Description:

Tall, multibranched plant with thorns and small, round, green leaves. These resemble cactus but are not. They can reach up to 3 meters tall. The inflorescence is bright red and are at the tops of the long stems. The third image is of a dead plant that has fallen over. They are pollinated by hummingbirds.

Habitat:

Anza-Borrego desert during the 2019 Super Bloom. This species is found in northern Mexico to Southern California and as far east as Texas.
