Field Notes

Description:

The turquoise color around this dragonfly's nose is distinctive as well as the same color sections on the front of the thorax. Brown face and eyes and partly translucent abdomen.

Habitat:

Perched on the limb of a dead bush over an inland fresh water canal in western Boca Raton FL

Notes:

Thorax pattern looks a little like that of a blue dasher but the colors are all wrong in comparison with the ones I have seen in this area and this one has very little color on its abdomen. Sadly the photos are a little unclear because it was such a windy day.

Species ID Suggestions

Thanks for the ID Geodialist!
My best guess: Metallic Pennant dragonfly (Idiataphe cubensis), possibly a male. http://bugguide.net/node/view/51985 Disclaimer: My expertise is limited to odonates of the mid-Atlantic states (USA). Sometimes I enjoy the challenge of ID-ing species that are new to me.
