Field Notes
Description:
Fairly large butterfly ranging in size from 2 1/2 to 4 inches. Upperside of the male is tan to orange with black scales on the forewing veins. Females are tawny and are darker than the males. Underside of the hindwing has a wide, pale submarginal band and large silver spots.
Habitat:
Open, moist places including fields, valleys, and meadows. This is the most common fritillary throughout most of the eastern United States.
