Crab Spider
Genus: Misumena
48.8311, -114.195
Field Notes
Description:
Probably this is the species vatia, but I'm not sure. Spiders in this genus can change colors to some degree over the course of several days to reflect what it is hunting on. Typically I find them to be either white or yellow and sitting on flowers of the same color. The size of the pink stripes is variable. This particular spider was slightly less than 1 cm (1/2 in) in length.
Habitat:
I photographed this spider in an open area along the edge of a lake in a mountain forest.
Notes:
These spiders are ambush feeders, often lying in wait on flowers for bees and flies to arrive.
