Field Notes

Description:

These box turtle eggs were found on the edge of a road beside my house. There were 4 eggs when discovered, but I believe two of the eggs were infertile. My brother built an incubator and we ended up with two healthy female hatchlings :)

Habitat:

Eastern box turtles prefer deciduous or mixed forested regions, with a moderately moist forest floor that has good drainage. Bottomland forest is preferred over hillsides and ridges. They can also be found in open grasslands, pastures, or under fallen logs or in moist ground, usually moist leaves or wet dirt.

so cute! We had brought home a turtle to babysit from the Science centre. He communicated with us by chirping and making bird calls!
Yeah, turtles have always been my favorite in the baby form :)
What a moment to be present at! Never realised baby turtles were so adorable - that first picture is the cutest thing I've seen in a looong time :)
My brother is really the turtle master. He has been the turtle expert since we were kids, and I knew these eggs were in great hands with him. I was just fortunate enough to come back home the day these babies decided to hatch :)
How cool. I bet you 2 are so proud of yourselves. I sure would be.
Thanks :) I love these turtles so much and always have. I have seen a big comeback in box turtles in this area in the past few years, which makes me very happy and hopeful
I just love turtles!! This is a great picture and you are a great person for helping those adorable little creatures
Not sure when they will be released yet. They need to be fully mature in order to avoid predation, etc.
wow...you and your bro helped these little fellows to come into this world..KUDOS!! where are you going to release them?
