Monk parakeet. Cotorra argentina
Myiopsitta monachus
39.466, -0.362393
Field Notes
Description:
It measures 30 cm long and weighs 140 grams on average. It is characterized by its light green color, more grayish towards the chest. Horn-colored bill and grayish legs.
Habitat:
It originates in the temperate to subtropical areas of Argentina and the surrounding countries in South America. Self-sustaining wild populations are found in many places, primarily in North America and Europe.
Notes:
These imported exotic birds are a serious problem, as they threaten native fauna, for example sparrows; transmit diseases to other birds or humans; and their nests are considered a "risk to the integrity and life of people" because they weigh a lot — normal, between 40 and 50 kilos, but can reach 200.
