Field Notes

Description:

orange berry becoming darker red as it gets older, somewhat acidic due to oxalic acid, usually ripens about the time that the salmon run in the rivers but this year they're really late.

Habitat:

open areas of temperate rain forest near the coast

Notes:

Unlike raspberries, they don't cluster, so they're pretty slow picking & not very good for jam, but many like their refreshing qualities (especially bears!)
