Field Notes

Description:

Not sure if this is a sea biscuit, sand dollar, or some other echinoderm. I found this and many others like it, including some more spherical sea biscuits that were definitely a different species. Most were stuck together with rock and sediment, but this one was fairly clean and free from any lime rock.

Habitat:

Sandy, lime rock-rich path near salt marsh

Thanks Machi. How interesting to find fossilised creatures. I live in hope!
Hi Leuba, most were covered in or attached to rocks (living echinoderms would not be). You can also tell because they were in little patches of lime rock that we often find other marine fossils in above. Also, while we were near salt marsh, we were still pretty far from the ocean, and above the high tide line at that.
Nice find. I am interested in knowing why you call it a fossil, Machi.
