Canyon Live Oak
Quercus_chrysolepis
33.0967, -116.667
Field Notes
Description:
I found several canyon live oaks on the Inaja Trail, in Santa Ysabel/Julian, CA area. The live oak also are making a return since the 2003 Cedar fire near Julian.
Notes:
From wikipedia link: Native Americans used the acorns of this species as a food staple, after leaching of the tannins; moreover, its roasted seed is a coffee substitute. After forest fires, Canyon live oak regenerates vigorously by basal sprouting, and the clonal diversity of this species has been shown to be high.[1]
