Field Notes

Description:

Both of these butterflies are from the Nymphalidae; Satyrinae. The Satyrinae are commonly known as "Browns". Using the first picture, for reference, the butterfly on the left is Mycalesis frederici Aoki & Uemura, 1982 (Frederici Bushbrown). The one on the right is Mycalesis janardana micromede Fruhstorfer, 1900 (Janardana Bushbrown). This is the first time that I have seen two butterflies of different species sitting so close together. I saw them at 7:00am and the plant they were resting on was in the shade, but nice and dry. The open areas of the backyard were all drenched in a heavy morning dew. So, I think they may have been sitting together all night and were now waiting for the sun to dry the grasses and foliage, before leaving their comfortable perch.

Habitat:

These two Browns were spotted in our backyard early this morning.

Notes:

One of my photos was taken "square-on" to the right side of the Janardana and by pure chance, the smaller Frederici was completely hidden behind it. So I have not included it here because I have never managed to photograph a Janardana before and this gives the me opportunity to create a separate spotting just for Mycalesis janardana micromede.
