Description:

This is a young adult female Argiope luzona and she got my attention this morning because, despite the fact that she was fairly high overhead, I saw that her stabilimentum was a very unusual shape. My first picture is enlarged and cropped to show the spider in some detail and the second picture is a less cropped version of the same photo, to show the complete stabilimentum. The spider must have used an excessive amount of silk to create this very thick and "heavy" looking web decoration and I have never before seen this shape. I know that this shape does not exist in the standard repertoire of stabilimenta of A. luzona. So, i can only hazard a guess that this might just have been some momentary aberration, but whatever caused this strange shape doesn't really matter. I am just happy that I saw it and got the chance to take a picture and post it on Project Noah.

Habitat:

This Signature Spider was spotted in our backyard on its web, hign up on the underside of the leaflets of a Coconut Palm.

Yes, the stabilimentum does look thick and heavy.
