I think it is definitely the former! Thank you.
Could be the "common earthball / pigskin poison puffball" (Scleroderma citrinum). In this case its poisioning! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scleroderma_citrinum Or "Giant puffball" (Calvatia gigantea) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calvatia_gigantea Can you cut it to see the inside of the mushroom?
