Field Notes
Description:
Small grey butterfly with slight iridescence on the dorsal side of the wings. It has striped antennae and it has a furry appearance up close. It isn't shy toward humans or shadows and I was able to get very close to take pictures. It is about an inch long. Everything else can be seen in the pictures.
Habitat:
This specimen was found in town in a sheltered yard. It was in the corner where there was plenty of shade and was much cooler than the rest of the yard. It remained at 3-7 feet above the ground until it came to an obstacle. It laid eggs at about 4 feet off the ground.
Notes:
This particular butterfly was in town on a Rose of Sharon laying eggs. These pictures don't show it, but it was going through almost a ritual before laying them. It flew to a branch, moved its hind wings back and forth while pacing and circling, then it laid the eggs and then opened its wings slightly. After about 10 seconds or so, it flew off.
