Thanks Eulalla for the very through answer.
The causes of the proliferation of jellyfish in the Mediterranean Sea are: - The increase in nutrients in seas and oceans by dumping fertilizers and sewage from urban areas, which accentuates the availability of nitrogen and phosphorus in the seas. - Reduced predation by the decrease in the number of natural predators such as loggerhead turtle. - The increase in sea temperatures, which accelerate their life cycle. - The drought, which reduces the supply of fresh water from rivers and destroys the cline in salinity, which retains the jellyfish at sea.
What makes them a "pest"? Are they introduced, or is it just that there is lots of them?
They are a pest in the Mediterranean Sea. But fortunately Cotylorhiza tuberculata they are harmless.
Ooooo. A fried-egg jellyfish. I've seen videos of them. Pretty, but a bit disturbing looking as well.
