Description:

California subspecies of Belding's ground squirrel. The one in the photograph was trying to scavenge our lunch, while the rest of its colony was active around the north shore of Long Lake.

Habitat:

Subalpine meadow on the north shore of Long Lake in California's Sierra Nevada. Elevation was around 3,300 m (10,800 feet).
