Hi.. This is juvenile stage of this mid size tree. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Populus_fremontii
Afraid not Ashish, I spotted this while hiking in California so it's probably native.
ScottRasmussen, I definitely saw the resemblance in your link with the leaves, but I never did see any of the growth from your link. However it is the most closely related species so far. Thank you for the ID! And thanks Emma as well! :)
Thnx for the expert advice Scott.!!
The link in that spotting also refers to Fremont Cottonwood, but the tree in those pictures is a Western Redbud.
@ Coral and @ Scott is there any similarity bet this spotting? http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/6878251
It's an aspen or cottonwood, genus Populus, but I'm not sure what grows in CA besides P. tremuloides, Quaking Aspen. The leaves seem too triangular for Quaking Aspen, Fremont Cottonwood maybe? http://www.calflora.org/cgi-bin/species_query.cgi?where-calrecnum=10256
Could this be a black cottonwood tree?
