Field Notes

Habitat:

Spotted in our front yard on Caladium bicolor.

Notes:

This is a 4th. instar larva and, as you can see in the photo, it has just moulted. When I took this photo, back in 2016, I knew very little about this species. So, I could scarcely believe my eyes when I saw what happened next. As soon as the larva had freed itself from its old skin, it turned round and started eating it. The last part to be eaten was the tail horn and the caterpillar seemed to have some trouble chewing it, but it ate everything and left no trace. The reason I did not take a photo, of the feast, was that I switched my camera to "video" and recorded the complete procedure.

Thank you for your comment, Sukanya.
I never knew they eat the cast off skin too. The eggshell, yes ! No age restriction on learning.
