Field Notes

Description:

Wings are black (sometimes with a blueish sheen), the legs are orange, and has a pair of yellow stripes on the shoulders. It has eight white spots on its wings (hence the name octomaculata).

Habitat:

Field

Notes:

I ended up crawling through some grass to get some pictures of this one. It's a beautiful moth, just super neat. I included the second picture so that you can see that it does indeed have eight spots. There are a good number of other species that look similar to this one, so check out BugGuide for a list and pictures of those. Be prepared so that you aren't fooled in the field!
