Egyptian Goose
Alopochen aegyptiacus
-23.4013, 29.4179
Field Notes
Description:
Such an interesting bird. Spotted in Kruger National Park, South Africa.
Habitat:
The species inhabits a wide range of freshwater wetlands in open country, including reservoirs, dams, pans, lakes, large ponds, rivers, marshes, sewage works, estuaries and offshore islands
Notes:
It is the only extant member of the genus Alopochen, which also contains closely related prehistoric and recently extinct species.
Egyptian geese were considered sacred by the ancient Egyptians, and appeared in much of their artwork. They have been raised for food and extensively bred in parts of Africa since they were domesticated by the ancient Egyptians. Because of their popularity chiefly as ornamental bird, escapes are common and small feral populations have become established in Western Europe.
