Ricaniid planthopper
Ricanula sp.
-2.56289, 140.504
Field Notes
Description:
At first glance the small insect may resemble a moth but it is actually from the Hemiptera: Ricaniidae: Ricanula. Perhaps the differences exhibited here are sexual dimorphism?
Habitat:
Large semi-urban yard/garden adjacent to a disturbed patch of remnant forest. One hopper is on an ornamental croton (Codiaeum variegatum) and the others are on breadfruit (Artocarpus altilis).
Notes:
A similar species can be seen here: http://globalspecies.org/ntaxa/703156.
Also featured (3rd photo) is a (white) planthopper (Flatidae: Colgar sp.?). All of these individuals were photographed within less than 5 meters of one another.
