Field Notes

Description:

butterfly, medium brown with darker brown spots on dorsal surface, swallowish tail, long antennae, movements rapid, jumpy almost "nervous" in nature

Habitat:

Suburban Long Island boxwood bush.

Notes:

What I found out about comma butterflies which I didn't write at first. They will "buzz" you, this one kept coming toward me as if it wanted to land on me - making it interesting to try to take a picture. Evidently this is common for the comma. There are several related species as per Wisconsin Butterflies - the Eastern comma, the Grey Comma, Green and Satyr Commas. As I have no experience in butterfly id and the distinctions are on patterns on the fore- and hind- wings, I am open to suggestion/correction/confirmation of it being Eastern Comma.
