I had to look this up the other day when someone at the Nature House asked me where all the male mallards were.
Birdterp, I faintly remember a discussion about bills/feet color, but could not remember the significance of the yellow vs orange bills. I incorrectly remembered and thought it was feet not bills, haha, oops. I changed my ID suggestion to favor yours.
They look like females but are males in eclipse plummage. notice the yellow bills? Females have orange bills. They will return to their more familiar coloration in the fall.
