My book says the population is headed down. It's the only woodpecker with an all-red head. Body and wings are boldly black and white. Juveniles have a brown head and back. It excavates nest holes in trees adn telephone poles and may also use birdhouses that have a hole 1.75-2.75 inches in diameter and that is 10-14 inches above the bottom of the floor which should be 5x5 inches. So they are a little particular about their birdhouses.
