Field Notes

Notes:

This palm tree is on a historical site in Walnut Creek. The home was one of the first built, about 150 years ago. In this palm tree trunk are many holes ,mostly made by woodpeckers. The Snails have made it their home.
When I was examining the trunk I saw these Snail Homes!

@ Cindy, I added my snail spottings to the Garden Snail mission.Do you think that if the mission was" Land Snails of the world" we could include more species?
@ Meik,we have many Acorn wood peckers around here and this home probably occupied an acorn before!

The snails are very likely living inside an acorn wood peckers granary. There was a great study audubon posted a few months ago... Something like the average acorn is aged for two years plus a few months and moved EIGHT times. If they keep them in supertight holes no other animal can take them as only their beaks can pull them out.
