Crab Spider; Araña Cangrejo
Misumena vatia
40.5405, -3.68698
Field Notes
Description:
Small crab spider. These spiders can be yellow or white, depending on the flower in which they are hunting. They can change the color at will. These spiders change color by secreting a liquid yellow pigment (kynurenine) into the outer cell layer of the body. If the spider dwells longer on a white plant, the yellow pigment is often excreted. The color change takes about two days.
To hunt down their prey they do not prepare the typical spider webs. His technique consists of stalking, for which he waits with his front legs extended and ready, until a victim is at his fingertips.
Habitat:
Spotted at a Thapsia villosa inflorescence. Open evergreen oak forest. Dehesa de Valdelatas, Madrid
