Field Notes

Description:

A crustose lichen species found on rock substrate. Thallus a typically dull grey colour, and black spot-like fruiting bodies (largest approx. 1mm dia.). Those fruiting bodies were unusual in that they appeared to be very smooth with angular edges, and raised with a flat surface. Not apothecia like most I've seen because they weren't cup-shaped - they looked more like tiny little choc chips :) Mostly grouped in small clusters, although some were isolated.

Habitat:

Spotted on a humble little rock on the Mt. Mathieson Trail at Mt. Mathieson, Spicers Gap. Wet sclerophyll forest, and this particular location was very well-sheltered and shaded. The area is part of Main Range National Park, and the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area.

Notes:

Some ID ideas would be welcomed. The species I'm leaning towards at the moment are: Buellia sp. and Paraporpidia sp., maybe P. leptocarpa. Ultimately, I just don't know.
